The Golf Club of Bridgewater in Lakeland, Florida opened in 2007 and the 18-hole golf course has entertained and challenged golfers ever since. The Bridgewater course was designed by internationally-renowned golf course architect, Steve Smyers. Teeing off from the black markers allows golfers to play a full 7193 yards across 180 acres - with no homes in the way. In fact, Smyers designed the course to encourage golfers to strategize, not to penalize them.
The Bridgewater course has received rave reviews from a variety of sources. Specifically, Bridgewater received an award as one of the top 100 courses by Golf Week in 2008. It also was nominated by Golf Digest, Golf, and Golf World magazines as being one of the best new courses. Players have called Bridgewater a premier links course. Even as a relatively new course, Bridgewater has hosted several tournaments. These include the Moonlight Golf Tour and the Florida Senior Tour. Bridgewater is guaranteed to accrue awards and recognition for many years to come.
The City of Lakeland is ideally situated between Orlando and Tampa. Consequently, attractions abound, ranging from Busch Gardens, the Museum of Science and Industry and the beaches of Tampa Bay to Disney World, Epcot Center, SeaWorld and Universal Studios in Orlando. Lakeland also has its own historic charm with restaurants, museums and a performing arts center.
Whether visiting Orlando, Tampa or Lakeland itself, Bridgewater possesses a unique golf experience. The par 71 course provides players with subtle hills, scattered trees, tall grasses, lakes, and sand traps. The Bridgewater course also converted distressed wetlands into 40 acres of unspoiled wetlands. Additionally, when players reach the infamous, signature hole number 4, (a.k.a. Heart Break Ridge), they are not given much leeway as they drive to a tapered green that is surrounded by water and a bunker.
Interestingly, course architect, Smyers, designed the course so that there is a route for players of all levels. Each golfer is encouraged to play to his or her desired level; however, the greater the risk, the greater the reward. Although the clubhouse is still in the design stages, golfers can find a full pro shop, a snack bar and a patio area. There is also an area for those who want to practice their short game
